As if we didn't have enough Pre rumors to sort through, along comes TechCrunch and Mikey A. with some hard hitting stuff. According to the TC honcho, one of his "better sources" claims that Palm is "very far along" on a second webOS device which is smaller and slimmer than the Pre and may or may not have a physical keyboard. Apparently, this won't be the iPhone 3G to the first-gen iPhone, rather a device which addresses "a different part of the market." Details are still sketchy, but Arrington claims that the "Mini-Pre" (his name) will land sometime this year -- possibly as soon as the Fall. This is all complete rumor right now, but Palm has previously said that there would be more than one webOS device, so the idea of another model in the oven doesn't exactly come as a surprise. Stay tuned for further updates as we get them.

Okay, yes, we understand that Moto's W series of handsets is targeted at the lower end of the market -- but is that any excuse for it to be ugly? We'd like to believe that this odd little beast is fake, but we have a bad feeling that it's the real deal -- all three mismatched colors of it. Add in the oblong d-pad, the forgettable camera, and the rumor that it'll be EDGE only, and we really don't care how water resistant the sports-oriented W7 might be, we're pretty sure we don't want anything to do with it. Maybe an overwhelmingly lukewarm reaction to the leak could send it back to the drawing board, eh?

Hey, Palm, you know when isn't a good time to brag about your rich, time-honored tradition of gaming software stretching back some ten-plus years? Right before the release of webOS and the Pre, a device you've straight-up told us isn't intended for games -- that's when. A lighthearted post on Palm's official blog today waxes poetic about the top Palm OS game downloads on Handango and mentions a few favorite classics from around the blogosphere, but here's the thing: unless Palm wants to get serious about bringing entertainment to the Pre, this just rubs salt in our TurboGrafx-16 emulator-craving wounds. The TI-sourced OMAP3430 underneath the Pre's skin is more than capable of knocking console-quality games out of the park, so we'll just have to twiddle our thumbs for a few months and see how this plays out; at the end of the day, it might simply be a question of how open Palm ultimately wants to get with its SDK.

Reportedly, over 25 million Chinese-sourced handsets in India are making / receiving calls without an international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) number to identify it, and authorities believe these phones enable terrorists to communicate more easily in undetected fashion. Recently, it moved to delay a ban on IMEI-less handsets from January 6, 2009 to March 31, 2009, though it seems as if a special IMEI-loading software could enable those with knockoffs to continue using them lawfully. Way to think green, India.

Trust us, we're as sick (if not more so) of hearing about this so-called soft economy as you are, but the statistics here just don't lie. It seems that in times of cautious spending, exuberant cellphones and their respective plans are one of the first things to go, with a number of prepaid-focused carriers reporting significant growth in Q3 2008. MetroPCS picked up nearly a quarter-million net new subscribers in the quarter (double its prior year increase), while Leap Wireless snapped up 156,000 net customers (tripling its year-earlier growth). Furthermore, T-Mobile has reported a gain of 670,000 subscribers in the same window, and over half of those were of the prepaid variety. On the real, we've nothing against prepaid in and of itself, but are you telling us you'd rather chow on fast food (over, say, Top Ramen) and live without unlimited monthly data? Don't kid yourself.

You're bound to face a few hiccups when you're a no-name brand trying to source an Android handset from a no-name ODM buried deep inside a Shenzen industrial park, and it seems Kogan's going through those growing pains right about now. The Australian company still says the Agora and Agora Pro will ship before the end of January (barely), but it looks like they're down to the wire with tweaks to the phone's design. For starters, the soft keys are gone -- not much use for those in Android anyway, last we checked -- replaced with a decidedly WinMo-esque set of home and back keys; the keyboard's been redesigned, too, and the d-pad is looking more usable than it had been before. For the Agora's price point, we're still sold on this thing -- but only if we can get something more than a printout of a pretty render delivered to our doorstep.

Reportedly, Nokia's director of product and technology marketing Sari Stahlberg was quoted as saying that "when the technology reaches mass adoption we would consider putting DAB radios into our phones," but rather than supporting it now and assisting the technology in becoming adopted en masse, it's fine to just wait things out. He continued with: ""The more the technology is adopted across Europe and other territories, the more chance it's got of being included." Translation? We'll be totally honest -- we pretty much blew Ruslan Kogan off when he proclaimed that he was about to push out a $199 Android phone by the year's end. And truthfully, the guy still hasn't totally delivered, but you won't find us kvetching about more Googlephones, regardless of MSRP. The Agora (AU$299; US$192) and Agora Pro (AU$399; US$256) are available for pre-order as we speak, though neither one is scheduled to ship out until the end of January. For those unfamiliar with Kogan, it's an online-only enterprise that has wares built specifically to its dimensions in China, and so far as we can tell, it's as legit as they come. As for specs, the Agora packs a 2.5-inch touchscreen (320 x 240), 3G networking, a backlit QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth 2.0 and a microSD card slot; the Pro adds in GPS, 2-megapixel camera and WiFi. So, with unsubsidized prices this low, are you willing to take a chance?

There's a market for low-end handsets in any country -- and in a country where CDMA still has as huge of a presence as it does in the US, you'd think Nokia would want to roll out all the artillery in its meager CDMA arsenal. Alas, Espoo makes it crystal clear that there aren't any American aspirations in the cards for the new 2608, a simple flip (or "fold" in Nokia parlance) available in fuscia, white, or black with pink, green, or blue stripes, respectively. It can be tethered to a PC, features a voice recorder and speakerphone, and packs an integrated LED flashlight -- but best of all, it'll be the lowest cost CDMA device Nokia offers when it goes on sale in the second quarter of next year. Just don't get your hopes up for an external display, alright?

Lenovo's phone biz soldiers on with P80 flip

In modern business, brand names frequently have very little -- nay, shockingly little -- to do with the company that's actually behind the product, and Lenovo's totally cool playing that game. Well, not Lenovo proper -- but Lenovo Mobile, which was sold off earlier in the year but continues to use the parent company's name to hawk goods. That's where the P80 comes into play, a new flip that features a 1-inch external OLED combined with a 2.8-inch primary display, microSD expansion to 4GB, 2-megapixel cam, and FM radio. Missing are dual SIM slots (surprisingly common in China) and GPS, but hey, at least it's available in seven tasty colors.

Remember that white Sega Game Gear that you always read about -- maybe even saw in a picture -- but never managed to actually find in real life? In the minds of average Game Gear owners, it reached near-legendary status; it didn't matter that the white wasn't necessarily any better-looking than the black, the sheer rarity of the darned thing made it an object of pure, unadulterated lust. Yeah, well, that's pretty much where we are with the white Touch Diamond right now -- we know it exists, but finding one is nigh impossible, and that alone makes it a thousand shades of awesome as far as we're concerned. Taiwanese site ePrice has some hands-on shots up and we think we're loving the look of the prism effect in the new color along with the two-tone action up front; yes, we'd like to see it launch everywhere, but a certain (perhaps nostalgic) part of us wants it to stay impossibly rare.

NTT DoCoMo drops the axe on its lame-duck Nokia E71

If you've been gritting your teeth and letting the PR onslaught of the iPhone 3G, Storm, and G1 knock you around as you waited for Nokia's entry into the widescreen, touchscreen superphone market -- that wait appears to be nearing it's end. Nokia has gone and gotten all official and release-y with it's anticipated (if somewhat disappointing) 5800 XpressMusic... or as we know it, the Tube. According to the company's PR, the device "is now, or will be soon" available in Russia, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Finland, "among others." If you'll recall, the phone boasts a 3.2-inch, 16:9 resistive touchscreen (hey, they throw in a guitar pick stylus), a 3.2-megapixel camera, 8GB of on-board storage, and the constant assurance that you're using a phone once called the Tube. No word on price or plans, but we expect cheap, and lots.

We're happy to see that 3's customers with the INQ1 will be able to safely roam on 1900MHz while tooling around the States -- nothing about a phone billed as social network-centric says that you should be traveling to countries where you can't stay on the grid, after all -- but we're a little less happy with the band and technology selection here. Okay, fine, it comes as no surprise that the phone has been tested only for 2G and without any sign of 850MHz, but we know the INQ1's maker Amoi has done North American stuff before, so why couldn't they humor us? For the same reason they couldn't make it look like anything but a generic Nokia slider, maybe?

Now, you can finally make the decision to buy in or keep looking on your home turf, as Vodafone Australia has finally launched RIM's first touchscreen BlackBerry. For consumers who signed up early for information on its availability, the carrier has sent out an email offering them exclusive access to order their Storm online (and get a free 8GB microSD card to boot). The email does note that stock is limited, so there's still no telling when they'll be available Down Under to the public at large. Nokia tying up with NTT DoCoMo for Japanese MVNO?

So Nokia has a 40-odd percent stake in the world's handset market. You know where that insanely high number isn't coming from? Japan, where the Finnish giant holds less than a 1-percent share of phone sales as it competes against domestic models from Sharp, NEC, Fujitsu, and others who've traditionally ruled over FOMA with an iron fist. We think that we can probably chalk that up to the simple fact that Nokia doesn't produce many (okay, any) wide VGA flip phones with one-seg TV tuners, but they're thinking bigger -- way bigger -- to the tune of a self-branded MVNO that'd operate on NTT DoCoMo's expansive network. A Japanese paper is reporting that the virtual network will launch next spring, initially with high-end models designed to establish name recognition in a market where it currently has none; Vertu is just starting to set up shop over there, so we're assuming they don't mean ridiculously high-end, but high-end in the sense that the spec sheets won't get laughed right out of town.

It's gonna be a good long while yet before we know whether Comes With Music is the rousing (and profitable) success Nokia hopes it is, but it seems Espoo might already be looking into what other sorts of media can be all-you-can-eat-ified for the benefit of its handsets. They're generally being coy about what the future holds for unlimited media, but company exec Tom Erskine noted that they're being "open minded" about the natural fit that games and movies would have with the Comes With model. Seriously, who wouldn't be down with an entertainment-focused Nseries that bundled a year of gaming? EA's European marketing director added that his company -- which just happens to make a crapload of mobile games -- is "supportive" of any creative ideas handset manufacturers dream up, which certainly sounds to us like code for "we'd totally be down for Comes With Games." Nokia, we eagerly await this initiative you've yet to announce.

News flash: mobile TV is not enticing. Like, at all. The viability of watching TV on one's handset has been questioned for years, and now we've got the numbers to prove that interest is waning. Recent research has found that mobile TV adoption sits at just 1% now, and interest in all types of mobile TV is just over 50% of what it was in 2006. The report places the blame on "patchy network coverage, limited channel lineup, poor video quality, excessive prices and a penchant among high-end phone users for business handsets rather than video phones," and we'd certainly have a tough time disagreeing. That being the case, it was still found that 15% of those surveyed on the topic would actually enjoy watching recorded TV shows later on their phone, suggesting that a little bit of choice when it comes to content may not be a bad idea. Hey Sprint, you listening? Granted, GSM doesn't do Sprint a whole lot of good in the States, but swapping a CDMA radio into HTC's first WiMAX effort here would make for a downright mighty response to the Touch HD. The previously-seen T8920 has turned out to be the MAX 4G, an 800 x 480 monster with 8GB of Flash on board, two cameras, an FM radio, GPS, WiFi, triband EDGE, and -- most importantly -- WiMAX support, making it the first GSM / WiMAX handset anywhere in the world. It'll be launching on Scartel's Yota network in Russia, and if you have friends cool enough to have a MAX 4G of their own, calls between the two of y'all will automatically be routed over the WiMAX airwaves using VoIP. A launch date hasn't been announced, but unless you're in Russia, there's probably not much point in even bothering to lust after this one.

There are phones for the geriatric set, and then there's the ClarityLife C900. This mobile makes no bones about what it is -- a dead simple candybar that's meant to easily place / receive calls and give owners access to an impossible-to-miss red emergency button. It also boasts large buttons for easy dialing, a large backlit screen with humongous text, a fierce vibrating ringer, inbuilt flashlight and a speaker that's "twice as loud" as an ordinary cellphone. Ironically, there's two full paragraphs explaining how to actually get a SIM card from your preferred carrier, so there's still a learning curve to overcome. At least Clarity makes the process of handing over $269.99 as easy as possible.

The E63 just broke the shackles of the rumor monger to become Nokia's latest messaging device. With a pre-tax, pre-subsidy price of just €199, Nokia hopes to see the Symbian S60 device generate some mass-market appeal. So let's see: WiFi, physical QWERTY, choice of ruby red or aquamarine blue, standard 3.5-mm audio jack, camera with video recording, and the ability to switch from an E-series business mode (corporate email, appointments, intranet) to personal mode (pictures, personal email, and browser shortcuts) with a single key press -- sounds like a winning combination to us. Nokia's even tossing in 1GB of Ovi file storage for free when the E63 begins shipping in the coming weeks -- where, is Nokia's little secret for now. iriver's wave touchphone hits Korea on March 9th

After teasing us with a touchscreen phone way back at CES this January, iriver has been decidedly mum on the subject ever since, calling what we saw more of a "proof of concept" than a ready-for-market product. Well, that veil has been lifted and we're finally staring at the iriver wave, a touchphone that iriver plans to start shipping in Korea on March 9th of next year with KT, and with other major carriers to follow. Other than a touchscreen, the phone packs WiFi and the traditional kitchen sink approach of Korean PMPs, with multimedia playback, FM radio, e-books and an electronic dictionary. There's miniSD expansion, access to the Bugs Music Service for online music and we're sure a few other perks hidden under layers of Korean spec sheets. Overall the physical design hasn't really changed much from what we saw at the start of the year (looks like that 3-inch, 480 x 272 touchscreen is quite intact), but the software has certainly been refined, and is devoid of many of its original, erm, iPhone-inspired touches.

Vertu's Signature S Design gets handled -- gently

At a staggering 242,380 Czech crowns (about $12,331), Vertu's latest Signature S Design model certainly isn't for everybody -- in fact, we'd venture to say that it's very nearly for nobody -- but putting the positively stupid pricing aside for a moment, you have to admit that this thing is beautiful in its own way. IDNES.cz somehow managed to grab both stainless steel and gilded versions of the 3G candybar, revealing that the user interface is about as plain-vanilla as any other Series 40 device out there (what do you expect for the price of a small car?) but the hefty body looks as beautiful in person as it does in Vertu's carefully-prepared PR. It apparently feels great, too -- not like we'll ever know. Anyone need a kidney?

LG intros SH470 slider in South Korea

LG's recently introduced SH470 has a lot in common with the KF510, but the Cyon branding and dark motif may be all that's necessary for the company to unveil it under a different model name in South Korea. The ultrathin slider checks in at just 10.9-millimeters thick and boasts a metal frame, 2.2-inch display, 2-megapixel camera and an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust brightness based on surrounding light conditions. Mum's the word on a price or an exact release date, but both of those tidbits could probably be uncovered if you're fluent in Korean.

Up next is the E2510 clamshell, which actually doesn't look too drab for a basic cellie. As promised, Vodafone has officially announced a November delivery order date for its BlackBerry Storm -- November 14, to be specific. Pre-orders are being taken (as they are in the States), so if you want to be in the first batch of Brits to rock this thing, it might be a good idea to go ahead and get on a list lest the throngs of humanity trying to get one on launch day end up harshing your chances. The keypad is well designed and functional, and the phone is very easy to use. The camera is one of the best available in this price-range: a 2 megapixel camera with digital zoom and a night mode (but no flash). The Sony Ericsson Z600 is a clamshell camera phone with a specification similar to the popular T610. It's not a small phone, and is really quite heavy, weighing in at 110g. The external display is tiny and black and white, but inside is a good quality 65k colour screen with a good resolution.
